New Music Friday

It’s Friday, the best day of the week for so many reasons.  I love Fridays the most because it’s the day artists release new music (but you probably already knew that).  Here’s what’s fresh this week.

We have a new single from my favorite guy, Still Woozy.  And once again, he delivers a fun, upbeat, hella catchy tune.  This song showcases some sexy falsetto and I’m here for it.  My only qualm with this song is I wish it was longer.

For me, this week’s biggest surprise release comes from a band I’ve been following for what feels like forever – Fruit Bats.  I thought they peaked with their 2016 LP (and SIXTH studio album!!) Absolute Loser.  But Eric D. Johnson is back with another well crafted, beautiful tune.  There’s something about the way Johnson creates chord progressions, it’s familiar, yet delightfully surprising; I never know where the chords are leading, but he always makes it work in a way that’s very pleasing to the ear.  If the rest of their upcoming album is as good as “The Bottom of it,” then we’re all in for a real treat.  Stay tuned!

Other songs hear this week:

Vampire Weekend – “Harmony Hall

Rayana Jay – “If You Won’t

ANIMA! – “Toughest Man

Post For What

Hey y’all ready for some good music? I’m working on a post about singer Moses Sumney for next week, but for now, here are a few songs I’ve been listening to lately.  Check it out!

First up, if you weren’t able to guess from the title, I’m obsessed with Drake’s new song, “Nice For What.”  I’m sure you’ve already heard it. I can’t get it out of my head, which has kind of been a problem, especially at night when I’m trying to fall asleep.  The beat is hella catchy, I can’t help but dance to it.  I haven’t listened to much Drake in recent years, (a 17-year-old judged me for only listening to rap music released before 2010), but this tune seems more upbeat than most of his other recent stuff.  I’m into it.  Plus the video is dope.

Next up is a new single from Still Woozy, who I’ve written about in the past, and ODIE, who I’ve never heard until now.  Once again, Still Woozy has created a song in fitting with his name; “Lucy” is fizzy and legato, I love how it slides from note to note.  ODIE is a refreshing addition to Still Woozy’s music, he has a great voice, both singing and rapping.  I can’t wait for a full length album from this guy.

Lastly we have a song from Norwegian duo Finding Neo.  “Bull Perfect” is slow, sexy, and beautiful.  Singer Andrea Ådland has a lovely, delicate voice with and without a fuzzy effect added to it.  This track is super jazzy, I love the piano part.  This is a perfect song to put on at a house party at the end of the night when it’s just you and a few close friends and you’re…winding down, if you catch my drift.

Quick hits:

-Cautious Clay – “Stolen Moments

-Inner State 81 – “Let Me Get Close to You (G O L D)

-ANIMA! – “Moving Mountains

New Year, new music

Happy 2018, folks!  This year marks a major milestone for me as my 30th birthday rapidly approaches.  Luckily, there’s plenty of new music to get lost in, so let’s get started!

I’ve come to expect nothing less than perfection from newcomer Cautious Clay, and once again he delivers with a new single, “Juliet + Caesar.”  It’s slower than his first two singles, but every bit as catchy.  I love the addition of a brass section, it adds to the sensual vibe of the track.  Also, everyone should subscribe to his Youtube channel!  I can’t believe he only has like, 200 subscribers.

I sometimes feel like using Spotify to find new artists is cheating because they make it so dang easy.  I miss the days of Myspace Music where you’d have to search high and low and finding a band or artist that you liked was so satisfying.  But I guess I shouldn’t complain, because without Spotify I probably wouldn’t have found this artist.  Still Woozy, AKA Sven Gamsky, has released a few singles, each one better than the next.  His soulful style, mixed with some beautiful harmonies, has me addicted. At first I thought “Cooks” was my favorite song, but then I heard “Vacation,” and now I think that’s my favorite.  “Goodie Bag” is also extremely catchy…I don’t know, I can’t choose, they’re all great.  I’m a sucker for a good bass line, and all his songs (which he makes on Garage Band !!!!) have interesting bass lines.  After some extensive internet stalking, I found out this guy is based out of Oakland…um me too dude, let’s hang out.

Finally, Troye Sivan has a new single, “My my my.”  The video is already trending on Youtube, so you’ve probably heard it, but it’s really good and I hope other artists try to emulate his pop style, because it’s pop music I can get behind.

I’ll try to not take a three month break and actually post once a week…ya know, New Years resolutions and shit.
