New Music Friday

It’s Friday, the best day of the week for so many reasons.  I love Fridays the most because it’s the day artists release new music (but you probably already knew that).  Here’s what’s fresh this week.

We have a new single from my favorite guy, Still Woozy.  And once again, he delivers a fun, upbeat, hella catchy tune.  This song showcases some sexy falsetto and I’m here for it.  My only qualm with this song is I wish it was longer.

For me, this week’s biggest surprise release comes from a band I’ve been following for what feels like forever – Fruit Bats.  I thought they peaked with their 2016 LP (and SIXTH studio album!!) Absolute Loser.  But Eric D. Johnson is back with another well crafted, beautiful tune.  There’s something about the way Johnson creates chord progressions, it’s familiar, yet delightfully surprising; I never know where the chords are leading, but he always makes it work in a way that’s very pleasing to the ear.  If the rest of their upcoming album is as good as “The Bottom of it,” then we’re all in for a real treat.  Stay tuned!

Other songs hear this week:

Vampire Weekend – “Harmony Hall

Rayana Jay – “If You Won’t

ANIMA! – “Toughest Man

Post For What

Hey y’all ready for some good music? I’m working on a post about singer Moses Sumney for next week, but for now, here are a few songs I’ve been listening to lately.  Check it out!

First up, if you weren’t able to guess from the title, I’m obsessed with Drake’s new song, “Nice For What.”  I’m sure you’ve already heard it. I can’t get it out of my head, which has kind of been a problem, especially at night when I’m trying to fall asleep.  The beat is hella catchy, I can’t help but dance to it.  I haven’t listened to much Drake in recent years, (a 17-year-old judged me for only listening to rap music released before 2010), but this tune seems more upbeat than most of his other recent stuff.  I’m into it.  Plus the video is dope.

Next up is a new single from Still Woozy, who I’ve written about in the past, and ODIE, who I’ve never heard until now.  Once again, Still Woozy has created a song in fitting with his name; “Lucy” is fizzy and legato, I love how it slides from note to note.  ODIE is a refreshing addition to Still Woozy’s music, he has a great voice, both singing and rapping.  I can’t wait for a full length album from this guy.

Lastly we have a song from Norwegian duo Finding Neo.  “Bull Perfect” is slow, sexy, and beautiful.  Singer Andrea Ådland has a lovely, delicate voice with and without a fuzzy effect added to it.  This track is super jazzy, I love the piano part.  This is a perfect song to put on at a house party at the end of the night when it’s just you and a few close friends and you’re…winding down, if you catch my drift.

Quick hits:

-Cautious Clay – “Stolen Moments

-Inner State 81 – “Let Me Get Close to You (G O L D)

-ANIMA! – “Moving Mountains

Ladies Night

This post has taken me forever to finish and I apologize, mostly to my husband, but also to the 4 people who randomly find this blog.  I’ve been sick and lazy, but let’s move on from my failures and get into some music!

This week, we’ll be listening to three unique female musicians that I’ve been listening to nonstop.   I’ve found that I unintentionally tend to post a lot about male musicians, and I’m not sure why. Although I am very picky when it comes to female singers; maybe it’s because most popular female singers on the radio suck, maybe it’s because they remind me of my own failures, WHO KNOWS.  But I’m super excited that I found these women to celebrate.  Let’s dive in!

I might be a little biased about this first singer because she’s been my best friend for almost 20 years, but her shit is too good not to talk about.  ATLEE just released her first single, “Mamma Says” and it’s very good.  She has a unique sound and a wide range which is showcased in this track.  “Mamma Says” is the kind of song that you’ll be singing for days after listening to it; it’s hella catchy, with a heavy bass line that will have you bobbing your head to the beat.  You can find her on all the popular music platforms (Spotify, iTunes, etc.) and she’ll be releasing more music in the coming months.  ATLEE is definitely an artist you’ll want to watch, she’s about to blow up.

This next artist has hit me pretty hard; Serena Wagner AKA Sniffle Party has released five dreamy, lo-fi, and all around beautiful songs. To me, her music is perfect, it’s exactly the kind of music I want to listen to.  I know I’m gushing, but this is really good stuff.  All of her songs have been on repeat for the last two weeks.  “Peach Dream” is the tune that hooked me, but “Wanderer” is also amazing.  Her latest track, “Waving” is heavier, but just as ethereal.  I love the harmonies she creates, they always surprise and delight me.  Just, please check her out, okay?

Lastly, we have ELIZA (another one-named wonder).  I first hear her on a COLORS video she did on Youtube for her song “Wasn’t Looking” and I was blown away by her vocals.  So much control, especially for a live performance.  Her voice is seductive and smooth, with the perfect amount of vibrato.  Plus, the bass in this song…I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, a good, funky bass line gets me every time!  ELIZA has been releasing music for about 8 years, but “Wasn’t Looking” is definitely a departure from her older stuff; it’s got more funk and soul.  I’m excited to see what she has in store for us next.

That’s it for this week, check back in next Tuesday for more music!

Music That Made Me Feel This Week

It’s been quite a week…the world feels like it’s coming to an end, from shootings to hurricanes, I’m starting to become disillusioned by humanity.  I mean, more than I already was, which I THOUGHT was a lot, but I guess it can get worse.  But music helps bring me back from the brink.  Connecting through music is one of the things that makes us human, let’s never let fear keep us from touching each other this way.  Here are a few songs that soothed my heart this week, I hope they bring you some joy and make you feel something.

Starting off, we have a single from Cautious Clay entitled “Cold War.”  Topical, indeed.  This song hit me hard, from it’s slow, sexy beginning, to the chorus which is lush with beautiful harmonies. To put it delicately, this song is sex.  And I want more.  I tried to find out who this guy is because I want to eat his voice with a spoon, which led me to his website where you can email him directly!!! I don’t know why I find that so crazy, maybe because he’s famous to me.  ANYwho, listen to this song, buy it, download it, repeat.

Next up is a new single from BORNS, which, oddly enough, is also a very sexy song.  It’s called “Sweet Dreams” and it’s unbelievably catchy.  BORNS has the ability to take the same chord progressions and make them sound fresh.  I particularly like the bass in this song, it sounds like an electric tuba and I’m diggin’ it.  Plus, his voice has the best falsetto, most men who sing in falsetto sound like it’s painful to them, but not BORNS.  I should probably find out this guys’ real name.

Last up this week is a track from Coastal featuring Jackie Mendoza called “La Luz.”  This is my favorite song of the week, maybe the month, maybe even the year. This tune starts off with tribal drums before morphing into what I would call techno delight, which is a term I just made up right now.  Meaning, the beats aren’t too intense, but they’re heavy enough to get your attention and make you bob your head.  At least that’s what this song did to me.  I love Mendoza’s voice, it’s light and fluid and you can tell she has real talent.  This song has been on repeat in my house all week and I’m not complaining.

A few quick hits:

Dark on Us” by Lucas Oswald

Still No Plans” by The band called Oh

Beautiful Light” By Uppermost

That’s all for this week.  I hope you’re all trying to stay positive and fight for what you believe in.  Peace.
